What is List Management?

List managers differ from list brokers. The list broker works for the mailer and gets a commission from the list owner. On the other hand, the list manager works for the list owner. Their job is to get orders for the lists they manage.  For this they are paid a commission, usually 30% of the list rental price. This allows the list manager to give list brokers their standard 20% commission and receive the remaining 10%. For their commission the list manager pays for the promotion of the list, handles the list orders, the order entries, supervises fulfillment of the orders, bills the customer, collects payments and remits the net amount due to the list owner.  For rentals that don’t come through a list broker but come directly to the mailer, the list manager customarily receives the brokerage fee as well. As list managers have grown in number, list brokers with their unique knowledge of list users and list sources have become list managers as well.  More lists are now handled by list managers who are also list brokers than in any other manner. A good list manager can generally double the income derived by a list owner who struggles to rent his or her own lists.   As a result the list management fee becomes inconsequential.
